Class Topics: 12.02.14

In Common Core Math Six today, students completed three review problems from Chapter Four dealing with algorithms for subtracting, dividing, and multiplying fractions.  An answer key was displayed to help with last night's evening practice answers.

Lesson 5.4: Dimensional Analysis was introduced, modeled, and practiced.  This is the most challenging lesson of the entire chapter.

P.O.N. 12.02.14
The Crayola Crayon company can make 2400 crayons in 4 minutes.  How many crayons can they make in 15 minutes?

Answer to P.O.N. 12.01.14
There will be 35 defective parts in a shipment of 1000.  I would set up a proportion and use cross-product: 14/100 = p/1000.  The cross-products give you 14(1000) = 400p. You end up with 14000 divided by 400 which equals 35 parts.

Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  • use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units.
  • manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying and dividing quantities.
  • understand the concept of a ratio.
  • use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.
  • use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  • complete page 17 and 19.

  1. The answer would be 9,000 crayons because if you can make 2,400 in 4 minutes you would divide those 2 numbers to get 600. 600 means crayola can make 600 crayons in 1 minute so if you multiply 600 by 15 you would get your answer of 9,000

    1. Wiley 3,

I like how you found the unit rate and then multiplied by 15 to get the number of crayons produced in 15 minutes.

  2. The Crayola Crayon company can make 9,000 crayons in fifteen minutes. I got my answer by first dividing 2,400 by 4 to figure out how much crayons that they can make in 1 minute. Next once I did that and got 600 I multiplied it by 15. I did that because they wanted to see how many crayons would be made in 15 minutes. Last after you multiplied 15 and 600 you should get 9,000. The 9,000 stands for how many cookies were made in 15 minutes.

    1. Knicksicle,

Nice work of calculating for the unit rate and then multiplying by 15 to get the total number of crayons produced. Were you baking last night? In your answer you stated that they made 9,000 cookies. I know you meant crayons.

  3. I got that they can make 9,000 crayons in 15 minutes.i got a ratio of 2400:4 and i also got another ration of x:15 after that i cross multyplied and got 9,000 crayons that he can make in 15 minutes.

    1. Shaw,

Good use of a proportion and cross-products to find that the company made 9,000 crayons. Don't forget to tell me what you divided to get 9,000.

  4. The company would be able to make 9,000 crayons in 15 minutes. To get that answer, I first divided 2400 by 4 because I wanted to know how many crayons were made in 1 minute. When I did that, I got 600 crayons made in 1 minute. Next, I multiplied 600 by 15 because I wanted to know how many crayons were made in 15 mins. Doing that, I got 9,000 crayons made in 15 minutes.

    1. Gibel,

Nice use of finding the unit rate of 600 crayons per minute and then knowing to multiply that by 15 to get 9,000 crayons produced. It is always good to see that Learwood students are still on the blog. Where is Rishy's response?
