Class Topics: 11.10.11

In EDM today, we reviewed for the Unit Three Summative Assessment by answering the questions below.  Tomorrow, we will complete second part of the assessment which involves a great deal of translating word phrases into algebraic expressions and equations.  Students will also need to be able to convert word problems into unit rates.

Review Questions: 

1. Which number property is modeled below?
• a + b = b + a
2. Which number property is modeled below?
• a(b * c) = ab * ac
3. Which number property is modeled below?
• a * (b * c) = (a * b) * c
4. How can I simplify the expression below using the distributive property?
• 6(y + 8u - 12)  
• Hint: Look inside the parenthesis for common terms.  If there are no common terms, "share/multiply" the six by everything inside of the parenthesis.  
5. Use substitution to solve the problem below:
• Solve 4p + (t - 9) if t = 18 and p = 5.

In Pre-Algebra today, the students worked with the following samples:

1. Biased
2. Random
3. Systematic
4. Stratified

Students completed their Guided Notes for Lesson 4.1 and should review those tonight while deciding on the different types of samples in their homework tonight.

Random Sample: by chance

Systematic Sample: chosen according to a rule or formula

Stratified: at random for a randomly chosen subgroup
