Day 69: Ratios & Rates / Dependent and Independent Variables / Ratios and Proportions

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students reviewed their work from the Gizmo from last week and Monday. Mr. Giomini introduced the newest topic: Concept Four: Rates, Ratios, and Proportions.

Due to our Gizmo, some of this was review which solidified students' understandings of ratios.  The focus today was part-to-part and part-to-whole ratios.

During Math 6 - 2°, students continued their work with independent and dependent variables.  Mrs. Long and Mr. Giomini organized the class into small groups to complete an activity where they had to identify the variables in real-world problem scenarios.

Students in Math 6+ began working on the newest topic: Concept Four: Rates, Ratios, and Proportions. Using the Gizmo from the other night, Mr. Giomini reviewed ratios, both part-to-part and part-to-whole. Class was encouraged to create ratios based on illustrations that Mr. Giomini provided.

Solving proportions was modeled and practiced.  The challenge was to uncover a way to solve ratios that were both part-to-part and part-to-whole given different real-world scenarios.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. understand the concept of a ratio. (1, 3, and 7°)
  2. use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. (1,3, and 7°)
  3. use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. (7°)
  4. analyze the relationship between dependent and independent variables. (2°)
  5. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm for each operation. (all classes)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6(1&3°): Page 14
  2. Math 6(2°): Page 229
  3. Math 6+: Page 59 (1 - 5)
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
