Day Nine: Algebraic Expressions and Combining Like Terms

Today in Math 6, students in  and 3° reviewed how to translate word phrases into algebraic expressions. Students then began work on breaking down algebraic expressions into terms, coefficients, variables, and constants.

During Math 6 - 2°, continued their work with translating word phrases into algebraic expressions.  Students today cut and paste different examples into their notebooks to help with their overall understanding of the concept.

Math 6+ students reviewed their quiz results with Mr. Giomini.  Common mistakes were discussed and a quiz breakdown was shared with the students.  Afterwards, Mr. Giomini explained why and how we simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers.      (Math 6: 1, 2 & 3°)
  2. identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms.   (Math 6: 1, 2 & 3°)
  3. view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity.  (Math 6: 1, 2 & 3°)
  4. identify when two expressions are equivalent.  (Math 6+)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6: Page 37
  2. Math 6 - 2°: Handout from Mr. Giomini and 1.3 Practice Buddy online
  3. Math 6+: Page 35 and 36
