Class Topics: 12.06.12

In Math Six today, students reviewed last night's Evening Practice with Mr. Giomini.  Students then used that base knowledge to work on Lesson 4.5: Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers with Unlike Denominators.  Students worked in learning pods and with Mr. Giomini to practice this skill.

When working on Evening Practice tonight, please refer to the video below to help with reviewing the content from today's lesson.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. estimate the sum or difference for two mixed numbers.
  2. generate equivalent fractions.
  3. find the Least Common Multiple for two fractions
  4. add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete Math Journal pages 136 and 137.
In Pre-Algebra today, students worked with Lesson 5.5: Coordinate Geometry.  In this lesson, students were introduced to the slope of a line.  The definition that was used to describe slope was the vertical change over the horizontal change or rise over run.

Using examples, students determined whether the slope of a line was positive of negative and then calculated the slope.  We also inferred that two lines with equal slopes are parallel to each other.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. use a coordinate grid to locate a line.
  2. determine whether the slope of a line is positive or negative.
  3. calculate the rise over run for the slope of a line.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete the Lesson 5.5 handout distributed in class.
  2. view the video below from Khan.
I bit different than class, but this is where
we need to progress to with this concept.
