Class Topics: 10.19.12

In Math Six today, students began Lesson 1-1: Variables and Equations.  During this lesson, we substituted given values for a variable and evaluated algebraic expressions.  New terminology was also a large part of this lesson: variable, coefficient, algebraic expression, constant, evaluate and substitute.
Today's Learning Goals:  The student will be able to...
  1. substitute given values for a variable.
  2. evaluate expressions.
  3. tell the steps for evaluating an algebraic expression.
  4. solve problems using P.E.M.D.A.S.
For Weekend Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete Lesson 1-1 Practice A.
  2. preview material for Lesson 1-2: Write Algebraic Expressions.  (CLICK HERE)

In Pre-Algebra today, we used our time to refresh on the first four lessons of the chapter.  We focused on dividing with decimals in both the dividend and divisor.  Skills also discussed in a game format were multiplying rational numbers, converting between fractions and decimals, simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting rational numbers.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers.
  2. convert fractions to decimals.
  3. simplify fractions by finding their Greatest Common Factor.
For Weekend Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete the handout provided by Mr. Giomini.
